How to connect your Android smartphone or tablet to your TV?

There are three ways to connect your mobile phone or tablet to your TV. You can use an HDMI cable, an MHL / SlimPort cable, or a wireless connection.

Are you tired of watching shows on your smartphone? You do not want / cannot hold your tablet for an hour and a half to watch a movie (count 3 hours if it's a Peter Jackson)? Connect your smartphone or tablet to your TV! Make the most of all your programs and watch Canal Play, Netflix, and Amazon Prime or enjoy YouTube on a bigger screen.

Here I want to tell you about the Bluetooth Transmitter, if you don’t know how to connect your headphone wirelessly with your TV you must read the great guide of Bestvela.

Connect your Android to the TV with an HDMI cable

An HDMI cable (which stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface) makes it possible to connect just about any video source to a television screen. If your TV is under 10, it has an HDMI port. HDMI cables have the advantage of transmitting HD video and sound. So you do not have to worry about losing video quality or having to use speakers since the sound will come out directly from your TV.
Unlike Apple products, many Android have an HDMI output (or one of its miniature versions).

Three HDMI jack sizes are commonly used.

  • Type A (left) is the standard. It is often present on large devices, such as televisions, computers or game consoles.
  • Type C (in the middle), also nicknamed Mini HDMI, and
  • Type D (right) generally qualified Micro HDMI, are found almost exclusively on tablets and smartphones.

Whatever your type of outlet, no need to break your piggy bank since you can find HDMI cables around 10 euro. If you do not have an HDMI output on your phone or tablet, there are other ways to connect them to your TV.

Use MHL or SlimPort to connect to the TV

If you do not have an HDMI output on your Android phone or tablet, you can use an MHL or SlimPort adapter. Both plug into the micro USB port of Android and both use a small box to convert the image / sound signal and transmit it to the TV.

You will have to shell out around 20 euro to get one of these adapters (plus the cost of the HDMI cable, if you do not already have one). MHL is in its third version and now offers a 4K resolution, like SlimPort, but has the benefit of being compatible with more TVs.

Note that if your TV's HDMI jack has an MHL logo on top, it means that when you plug in your MHL adapter with an HDMI cable, it will provide power to your smartphone or tablet. This feature is very popular since MHL 3 can use up to 10 watts and drain your battery.

In comparison SlimPort consumes very little electricity, so it is not necessary to plug your phone or tablet into an electrical outlet when using it.

Check the compatibility of your tablet, phone and TV before buying any of these adapters, as this varies by brand. For example, the Microsoft Surface tablet and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 work with MHL while Google Nexus 5 works with SlimPort.
For Apple lovers, it's easier but more expensive. The only way to connect your iPad to your TV is to buy the brand's HDMI lightning AV adapter at 59 euro (there is a 45 euro version for older iPads).

Connect your Android to your wireless TV

It is strangely satisfying to be able to transfer videos directly from his tablet to his television, and that without having to make a connection and thus be encumbered with yet another cable. This is possible thanks to the Miracast technology which makes it possible to establish a P2P connection, wireless, between two objects. Your TV turns into a mirror of your Android. Its only flaw (the same as MHL and SlimPort) is that your tablet must remain active when you share the content, if its screen turns off, your television too.

Miracast is compatible with Android 4.2 and a growing number of TVs. It allows you to watch videos in HD and stream players like YouTube.

To connect your Android to your TV you can also use Chromecast from Google. Chromecast connects to your TV (and mains) then works through your Wi-Fi. The device allows you to create a connection between your TV, your tablet and your phone and gives you access to MyCanal, YouTube.

For Apple lovers, it's (still) simpler but (still) more expensive. To connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV, wireless, you will need to get Apple TV (the 4th generation is 179 euro).

How to choose HDMI, MHL, SlimPort, wireless

It depends first of all on the material at your disposal. If you connect your phone with a cable, the contents of the phone will appear as-is on your TV screen. Simple and efficient. On the other hand, you will probably have to plug your Android into a socket or you will quickly run out of battery.

If you want to connect your device to your wireless TV, Miracast technology is the best thing at the moment. If your TV does not integrate Miracast you can get a key (many manufacturers offer) that will allow you to link with your Android.
